Tails is upset about his faliure to have revenge on Mario, so he's going to get revenge for his failed revenge!
The most common type of revenge is paying with the same money so...
Tails should set up things to kick Mario into the ocean, with different results.
That could be one of the endings! Thanks for the suggestion!
You can put checkpoints and two options when fail occurs: Restart from checkpoint and Restart from beginning.
And Tails could trick Mario into a fight with Tails Doll.
Checkpoints could work, but it would only be put at select points.
Coin system for Mario! ^_^

A coin system is a fail.
This is TAILS being the main character, so no coins for Mario. Besides, they only restore Mario's HP, whereas rings protect Tails from all damage.
You COULD put coins in, but seeing the player only controls Tails, it's pointless. Besides, coins only restore Mario's HP, and I think you, ManlyMan, already said damage is determined by hits; not a bar or number, so that also makes coins pointless.
You can use them for Mario collecting them for no reason, but nothing more than that.

Also, I suggest you throw in some trick... how can I call it... I can't say it's a trick "question"... well...
Let's say that when Tails has 4 options, and ALL of which gives Tails some items, be it rings or a rifle or whatever. Now say one of them says "Grab 50 rings". The player may say "Oh cool, more rings!" and selects that. You could fool them by throwing a death trap or something similar after Tails grabs the 50 rings (or make him lose all 50 upon grabbing them by falling into spikes, thus causing no gain for Tails). Now take that exact concept, and apply it in other sections of the game. It would make the viewer think before they click, and/or give them unexpected results.
"Surprise paths" is probably what I was looking for, but even that's not the perfect term.
I see... Items will be hard to implement, but may be worthwhile.

This is going to be hand drawn. I thought that I could use sprites at first, but it can't be sprites because of all the strange things I have planned. Sprites were used to help me learn animation basics, now I gotta step up a notch.

Really dude, if you want to strive to be better, you got to learn all those variables. Or else your flash will drop out of front page a lot faster. If your flash is highlighted in green or blue, you have a shot at winning an award.

The best "THAT IS SO UNFAIR" moment would be if Tails had 35 rings and gets hit by a badnik and instantly dies. Instead of losing his rings, he instantly goes straight to the death bed.

Sonic probably will not be in the game, but it's a possibility.
